There can be no argument that child obesity is at epidemic levels. If you disagree, spend thirty minutes on a bench at your local mall and watch the children that walk by you. Spending time outdoors, engaging in physical activity, and proper nutrition must be at the forefront of solving this problem.
However, a team sport is not necessarily the answer. Yes, the virtues of good sportsmanship and teamwork are valuable lessons that need to be learned and a team sport is an excellent opportunity to do that and there is a time and place for it. But a team sport can only be played with a large group of people.
The best sport for a child to learn is one that he/she can play their whole life. A sport that will go with them into adulthood. Tennis, golf, and racquetball are excellent examples of the kind of sport that should be encouraged. Some sports you can even play or practice by yourself, like golf. The most important thing that needs to be taught is that there is value in every sport, but the best sports are the ones that can be played from childhood to adulthood.
