Emphysema is a disease of the lungs that causes shortness of breath. Tissues that support the physical shape of the lungs as well as the function are destroyed. People with emphysema do not get enough oxygen and therefore can also get a symptom known as cyanosis, lowered oxygen levels and an increase in carbon dioxide levels. Smoking tobacco products is the major cause of emphysema. Other causes are exposure to pollution second hand smoke and other chemicals and toxins. People who have a protein deficiency called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) are a major risk of developing severe emphysema. This condition is typically inherited. As a result, consult with your doctor and be evaluated for lung complications.
