It’s a rare bonsai enthusiast who won’t be thrilled with the sight of a mature flowering crab apple bonsai and it won’t matter if it’s in bloom, in leaf, carrying a full measure of brilliant red crab apples or leafless and dormant for the winter. There’s no way around it, the Flowering Sargents Crabapple Bonsai– Malus sargentii is a very special tree for any bonsai collection.
This two foot tall, 30+ year old crab apple for sale at Zen Garden Bonsai is one of my many favorites from that site and a great example of why I want a Crab apple Bonsai Mother’s Day Gift. In the spring, it’s covered with fragrant white blossoms that morph into little green apples that in their turn will ripen over the summer. With the arrival of fall, the leaves transform into a brilliant display of reds and oranges and the color might persist through the winter as the tree will carry the fruit through the season.
This tree is planted in a mica drum shaped pot that I think complements it perfectly and is sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of outdoor life. I know I’m not the only mother on this planet who thinks that a bonsai is a perfect Mother’s Day gift idea.
